Here's a list of cottages and units at ESSH for those who forgot; when I was there in 88-89 some of the cottages were just used for storage. After talking to a few people who were there in the later years, some of the cottages/units changed, for instance; when I was there unit 2 & 4 were for boys located in the main building, unit 1 & 3 were for girls, however that might of been different when you were there!
Andalusia, Buckingham, Croyden, Durham, Eddington, Fallsington, Grier, Harrow, Ivyland, Jamison, Keith, and Langhorne..The name New Hope was given to Langhorne in the last few years of operation and housed boys who had more freedoms and liberties and required less supervision. Croyden and Durham were for little boys. Andalusia at one time housed little girls.
The main building had 3 levels, the main level had offices, the second level is where the units 1-4 were located, the 3rd floor was where the forensic unit was located, this was a lockdown!

I was on Unit 8 but then the whole unit was relocated to a cottage, I think it might have been Ivyland we were moved to. I remember when we were walking from the main building to our cottage I asked one of the staff why we were all being moved. and the response was simply "they sold the building" I pressed for more information, but was told I would "lose points" if I persisted. I'm not sure about when I was there exactly, just that it was in the mid to late 80's I'm leaning towards late 80's though since I think I saw someplace the facility was closed for good in 1991 which answers the questions I asked about why a state hospital would seel a building? nobody told us it was closing, just that everyone was being moved to cottages.

DeleteDiego Lopez aka The Black Wolf was my boyfriend for a while. I still have his love letters and yes, they were very ornate complete with drawings. He ran away and then showed up as my unit was walking to the Canteen and tried to grab me and take me with him. Unfortunately staff got me first but he was able to run away again.
DeleteMs Mabel was pretty mean herself. I think it is ok you made fun of her like that. I remember a few compassionate staff members but most were really quick to throw kids into seclusion. Ms Rosa put me in there more than a few times if I would so much as raise my voice. I was a cutter and was always put into seclusion when I cut myself. Was this therapy? I guess so.

DeleteI heard of this place later on & a few years later I've ridden the route 14 bus heading to Oxford Valley Mall in Langhorne & on the trip I've seen a struture which was then a school building but I couldn't see any cottages nearby but later on when YouTube was introduced I found a rare doccumentry called Children of Darkness based on the residents who once lived at Eastern State School many years ago but the interviews are from the then teenagers who lived there but the video was made in 83' & whoever watches the show may have known someone there & are looking for them now to see how are they doing but there are some kids who never stayed there like the redhead teen girl named Denice who was trying to commit suicide many time b'cuz her mother had died & her father had walked out on her but she later ranaway from the facility & no one today knew what happened to her but that was a good facility for children even if they're not mentally ill or retarded.

DeleteI was there in the 90s, was in the main building, but on the 2nd or third floors. I remember the place well, I remember attending the school, having photo class,where I first developed pictures, did tye dye shirts, leather class etc. I ran one time w a friend john miller, we ended running across the highway into the mountain area in the woods, and watching the search go on..lol, of course we went to the mall, hung out, till we were ready to go back. I liked the food and the canteen. My buddy Jessie was a trip, and Harold primrose, can't forget him as well. The staff I do remember, especially rob the chessmaster. Me Verna I remember too, and mrs.trovato...my teacher. I use to go to the bathroom, then take off and hide in the school weekly, just to put pressure on. The restraining techniques they used were torturous though. Putting us in those dirty infested rooms w steel doors, sliding trays on the floors like we were animals. I was there almost two years. I missed sledding there behind the chow hall, and messing w the girls. That was the best part of being there. I had outings w my mom on weekends, but never wanted to go back there. I ended up being forced into special education aquaafter leaving there due to a counselors recommendation, which technically ruined a future. I'm tommy noll, and this is part my story.

DeleteMy name is Shannon Howard, I was in Jamison cottage with Yvonne Farmer.I eventually got moved to Unit 3. I enjoyed Thursday nights at the canteen.The indoor swimming pool. I remember looking out the windows of Unit 3 and seeing the fenced in basketball space for the Forensic unit males. I got to work at the canteen during some week days. Cooking cheese steaks, fries, etc for the staff. Ping Pong tables, pool tables in the round building helped me to pass the time. I was there a total of 4yrs and them got sent to the Devereux Foundation. Troy Lupold, Heather Senseman, David Zernhelt, Jennifer Molgaard, Joy Slattery were some of the kids I was there with. I actually made alot of friends there,found myself, matured.

I was in the building and moved around a lot, I do remember the canteen,shool n other activaties. when I was there I was 12 and was there till I was 13. I met a lot of people who grew up near where I was from. a few of my friend's I made when I was there was from alotoona n state collage area. the one girl I met there that was from Altoona ran away n they never found her. I am orginaly from junuiata county and I now live in Lewistown pa ( Mifflin county) I was in there cuz my mom couldn't deal with me I was told cuz I had a split personality. when I was brung to essh I was brung there by ambulance not my mom. she never came to visit me that often unless she had to for meetings. I lost my father at the age 10. he was shot in front of me when I was 9 and he died when I weas 10. I took it hard cuz me and my father where close n also he died right after I turned 10. I had a lot of great people n friends I met there that help[ed me through a lot. I also remember being put in seclusion( the padded room) cuz me and my one roommate when I first got there didn't want to go to bed and we ran up n down the hall. I also remember movie night. ReplyDeleteGreetings. Jerry is alive and well in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. His life has been a struggle, but he has won out over homelessness & alcoholism. However, he has been employed for 13 years within our multi-dealership auto group. Our owners and employees have taken him under our wings. It's actually a great story. We love and care about Jerry. Jerry is sitting here with us as this is being written. He is in good health, lives on his own, and pays his own bills. A true success story.

DeleteI was there from 1973-1977 approximately i was in the hospital part 3 floor i remember looking out the big windows and that it was so bright were i slept there were so many beds and kids like myself it was a big dorm setting i remember also leaving the dorm through two big doors nurse station was to the rigjt it was a crazy place remember taking meds a least 3 times aday i also wonder if i was ever experimented on ? I was just to little i think i blocked out a lot of those memories anyway my name back then was Francis wayne Brouckerl i dont know maybe someone might remember me i remember parts of the rec hall cafeteria and also going to school lot more could say. Dont want to make a book out of this.

DeleteWith you. It was a dark hell . I witnessed a 12 year old girl beaten by male and female staff til they knocked her out. They took her to her bed and placed her in 8 points. Several hours later she was unresponsive and died soon after. I was there 84-85. I just only have bad memories. Always on guard for violence and abusive staff. It changed me forever. In 40s now still fighting anxiety. Paranoia and fear. And only after being in there I have never ever again been able to comfortably to anyone. I have absolutely no trust. I was not that way before being in ESSH.

ReplyDeleteI was on a wing with a similar child named aaron he was deaf, and Darnell washington, who was troubled like I was from abusive home life, there was dark haired staff member named gary he was a pedophile but was never removed or stopped from his nightmares that he caused kids for life.
ReplyDeleteHi I was there when I was for a yr. I think it was 85-86. I made a few friends when I was there and it made bearable for me when I was there. I was never in the cottages. I was in the main building. I did great in school there and great female n male friends some of them lived near where I did or a couple hrs away. 3 days before I was to get out my roommate which was my best friend n 2 other girl's I was good friend's escaped form wash but we never heard anything after happen n it still seriously worries me till this day. Cause the staff must not have cared or something happen n they won't admit it.

DeleteShe might have been one of them that ran away and when anyone ask about it. We would get told the staff n other's are looking into it or they wouldn't tell us anything! That made essh even more scary toe.

Hello There My Name Is Bernard Short , But you all don't really know me but I remember watching a documentary back on YouTube called Children Of Darkness because it was based on the Original Eastern State School & Hospital and it was made nearly 40 years ago since some of the patients & staff allowed themselves to be interviewed because I remember one female patient they called Denise who would later runaway from this place on her 17th. birthday & to this day the suicidal teen hasn't been seen or heard from since & the staff never reported her missing back then .

ReplyDeleteGirlsowicked I know where u r coming from. I was a essh around the same time you where. I made a lot of friend's there. I know e of them ran away n when u ask anything about it. U never got an answer. I also bad times there. I was taken to essh by ambulance my mother was to come down n she didn't. My dad that raised me dies when I wasn10. My mom only came to see me when we had parent meetings. Otherwise it was my name ( grandmother n aunt) who would visit me n would be able to do stuff with me I just had to be good.

I know I was put in seclusion a lot n not all because me. Iwas put seclusion my first full day) night) there. My one room7nwas acting out screaming n jumping on the beds. All I did was say was please stop trying bro sleep. N I was told I was in the wrong.

Okay then but you may have known a suicidal teenager going by the name Denise because I've watched that same documentary a couple of years ago when they've interviews this girl nearly 40 years ago because this place was so horrible to their patients back then because if someone like her ran away from there , Chances are that the staff should've been notified plus this could've been aired on television throughout the viewing area alerting anyone about an endangered runaway but that never happened & to this day her whereabouts are unknown .

I was treated really good by the staff and didn't experience any of the things i am reading about now. I really remember Harry who ran the canteen and Mr. Ed from unit 2. ReplyDeletetwo of our unit staff were Mrs. Celest and Mrs. Rosa. I also remember Pedo Mr. Gary, I used to feel uncomfortable around him, cause that dude would just not stop staring! I also remember the round building where they had the Christmas ball, I had on a bell gown. They had me in the troubled teen class at their school, but honestly, our teacher there was so patient and amazing, she taught us about the Holocaust, we watched the movie Escape From Sobibor and she even had a guest speaker come to out classroom which was one of the ones that escaped from that holocaust camp. She really taught me a lot.
I also remember working in a shop there where we used to pack all these little bits of rubber rings in small containers and get paid per how ever many we packaged.
